Easy day: Arcata Plaza, Arcata Marsh, Sequoia Park Zoo / Redwood Sky Walk, and Moonstone Beach or Trinidad Head.
Bigger redwoods + coast: Prairie Creek Visitor Center, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, Elk Prairie, Gold Bluffs Beach, and Fern Canyon if the road looks reasonable.
Avenue of the Giants: iconic, but save it for a deliberate long-drive choice; it pulls you south before another long southbound travel day.
Yosemite Reality Check
Use a Plan A / Plan B mindset. Plan A is Valley + Mariposa Grove. Plan B adds Glacier Point only if the road is open.
Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road are not guaranteed in early May. Keep Glacier Point as a bonus; if closed, use Valley View, Cook's Meadow, Lower Yosemite Fall, Sentinel Bridge, and Mirror Lake instead.
Mariposa Grove logistics: most visitors use the free shuttle from the Welcome Plaza when the road is open. Budget extra time if you try to add it after Yosemite Valley.
Water safety matters in May. Waterfalls are strong, rocks are slick, and rivers run cold and fast.
Disney / Anaheim Tweaks
Start standby-first. Do not buy Lightning Lane until after your first park day tells you whether the family needs it.
Best Lightning Lane candidate: DCA evening, because the window is short and the must-do rides are concentrated.
For World of Color, check the app early for viewing options and plan to be near Paradise Bay well before showtime if it matters to you.
Free day modes: Recovery Mode, Local Food Mode, or Mini-Adventure Mode. Pick based on how the family feels that morning.
Drive-Day Ideas
Bayside to Oakhurst: make the first scenic stop early, keep lunch flexible, and protect the afternoon drive. This is the day most likely to feel longer than it looks.
Oakhurst to Anaheim: keep lunch flexible around Fresno or Kettleman City, then push through before Los Angeles traffic thickens.
