Humboldt / Redwood Add-Ons
Fern Canyon + Gold Bluffs Beach — a bigger Day 2 adventure if everyone wants redwoods plus coast. Expect gravel road, stream crossings, and wet feet. Day-use reservations usually apply May 15–Sept 15, so your May 8 date is before that window, but still check conditions.
Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway — easier redwood wow than a long hike, and pairs well with Prairie Creek if you want a classic old-growth drive.
Arcata Marsh — low-effort, close to Bayside/Arcata, good for stretching legs, birds, and sunset if the coast is foggy.
Yosemite Reality Check
No 2026 entrance reservation is required, but Yosemite still recommends arriving before 9 AM or after 5 PM to avoid traffic and parking pain.
Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road are not guaranteed in early May. Keep Glacier Point as a bonus; if closed, use Valley View, Cook's Meadow, Lower Yosemite Fall, or Sentinel Bridge instead.
Mariposa Grove logistics: most visitors use the free shuttle from the Welcome Plaza when the road is open. Budget extra time if you try to add it after Yosemite Valley.
Water safety matters in May. Waterfalls are strong, rocks are slick, and rivers run cold and fast.
Disney / Anaheim Tweaks
Confirm park reservations and showtimes in the Disneyland app the night before each park visit. Lightning Lane, entertainment, and dining availability can shift.
For World of Color, check the app early for viewing options and plan to be near Paradise Bay well before showtime.
Free day fallback: Downtown Disney for low-friction food/shopping; Anaheim Packing House if you want a non-Disney meal hall; pool/rest if the park days are running hot.

Drive-Day Ideas
Bayside to Oakhurst: make the first scenic stop early, then protect the afternoon drive. This is the day most likely to feel longer than it looks.
Oakhurst to Anaheim: keep lunch flexible around Fresno or Kettleman City, then push through before Los Angeles traffic thickens.
